May 27, 2021 · The 5C collets will grip very short work. Disadvantage is the very limited range. On work less than 5/8"+- you really have to have 1/64" steps.

I got lucky and my 4-point spider screws onto the same thread spec as an ER40 nut, so I just made an adapter to use ER40 collets instead: www.hobby-machinist.

I found an ER40 chuck mounted on an M2 taper with a draw bar to secure it in the spindle. I'm not sure which vendor it was but was one of the better known ones.
