Thru axles generally perform better than quick releases in all scenarios, which is why you'll find them on most mid to high-end bikes sold today. That said, they're also more expensive, heavier than quick releases, and make wheel removal a slightly more time-consuming task.

For a front thru-axle, this is measured from the inside to the inside of your fork. For a rear thru-axle, this is measured from the inside to the inside of your frame at the drop-outs. The O.L.D. measurement is often listed for many thru-axles but isn't necessary if you know the overall length.

A "Standard" 142x12mm Thru Axle can vary in length between 162mm and 171mm depending on the frame manufacturer. Type of attachment seat used at the interface where the skewer mates to the frame or fork.
