The voltage rating displays the “not to exceed” rating, which means you can replace a 370v with a 440v but you cannot replace a 440v with a 370v. This misconception is so common that many capacitor manufactures began stamping 440v capacitors with 370/440v just to eliminate confusion.

Another method is to use a multimeter to test the capacitance and voltage of the capacitor. If the readings are significantly lower than the rated values, the capacitor may be blown.

Yes you can replace your own capacitor. Secure all the power to your AC unit and (possibly) furnace or air handler BEFORE you remove ANY access panels. If you're not 100% clear on how to secure power to both units don't touch your AC - it's not worth your life.
