Throuple: A relationship between three people characterized as balanced, committed, and non-hierarchical. “Three” + “couple” = “throuple” — and that's called queer math. Triad: The common term for a throuple within the polyamorous community.

Some throuples sleep in a bed together; some sleep alone; and some rotate between sleeping alone, sleeping with one partner, and sleeping as a triad.

But polyamorous relationships can include any number of people while throuple refers to a relationship between three people. We should also note that not everyone who participates in consensual nonmonogamy identifies as polyamorous. Ultimately, it's up to the individuals involved to define their relationship.
