A good rule of thumb for RPM (when using the HF500) is to keep the setting at 15,000 rpm or higher for cutting woods. You will have more cutter speed which will make the tool cut easier and should provide a better finish.

Most hardwoods are good to work with. Walnut cuts well but is more expensive, yellow birch is good all around value. I stay away from hard maple on the cnc, it takes longer to cut and can be prone to burn marks if your feeds and speeds aren't dialed in.
